We finally started to clear the ground for our Hut the other day. My daughter thought this day would never come!
Artists impression

Around 15 trees in our wood came down, mostly sitkas and a couple of scots pines, during storm Arwin the year before last and the plan is to have them moved to our ride stop so that they can be milled on site. This needs done before we start the build, but we're clearing the ground in preparation and currently sourcing concrete blocks and hard core for the foundations and wood for the floor, walls and roof. The milled fallen trees will provide wood for our log burning stoves, sleepers to be used to create paths and beds, and planks with a living edge to clad the Hut.
The design is based on a hexagon with a reciprocal roof. This means the beams for the roof need to be extra long so we're talking to a few timber merchants over the next couple of weeks to make sure we can get the lengths we need.
I'm planning to do a few more posts as we go so will go into more detail as these become clearer. Exciting times.

Great news! All he very best with the build. Keep us up to date on progress. 👍
Great news, Lorna! We’ll be starting our foundations soon, too. Would love to hear where you end up sourcing concrete blocks and other materials for it.
Good for you Lorna. It looks to be a beautiful design. We started work on our hut a year ago, after about 7yrs of wishing, hoping, dreaming, planning. Like you, our kids were skeptical we would ever get it off the ground. But we did. The youngsters have a different time-scale; 6 months is an eternity to them!
Enjoy your build.
Looks like you will be cutting a lot of angles. Definitely worth making up some jigs, so that multiple pieces can quickly be cut to the same angle.
