The new gateway to hutting in Scotland

Today Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Huts campaign is launching its new Resource Hub, where you can find everything you need to get you started on your hutting journey.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore the idea and are looking for inspiration, or are well on your way to making it happen, you will find useful information and tools for every step of the way.

Find out how to get land for hutting, and explore the process of planning permission for huts. There are pages tackling the thorny issue of how to afford a hut, and how to collaborate with others. For those on the brink of building their own hut, there is plenty information to help them get started designing it, choosing construction methods, and complying with the relevant building regulations for huts. Hutters will even be able to download technical drawings of a stud frame hut and a post and beam hut. If you’re worried about health and safety issues around stove installation or carbon monoxide risk, you will find pointers to help you make the best decisions.

To help avoid some of the problems of the past and to ensure that hutters and landlords are protected by robust legal agreements, there is also information on formal agreements and leases, and a Voluntary code of Good Conduct Between Hutters and Landlords.

For those that are thinking bigger - perhaps even wanting to develop their own hut site - there are pages on the joys and challenges of that process, with first-hand stories from others who are doing it.

If you are looking to connect with other hutters, whether to explore co-purchasing or leasing of land, or to exchange knowledge on anything from compost toilets to searching for land for sale, you can join the new Hutters’ Forum, and sign up to the Blog.
